CHANDIGARH: SIFF, under the aegis of the Save Indian Family movement has been participating in men’s rights conference since 2008. This year, SIFF is organizing the 3rd Men’s Rights Conference at Yercaud in Tamil Nadu on the 15th of August, 2010.
More than 100 men’s rights activists from all over India, representing about 15 different NGOs working for men’s rights, will be participating in the conference to intensify the movement of men’s rights in India.
Theme of the Conference: “SIFF and its allied NGOs, under the aegis of the Save Indian Family movement, are calling for a “Sugarless Independence Day”, this year. Men’s rights activists attending the conference have decided to have sugarless tea/coffee on the 15th of August, 2010 and also not to have any other sweets. This is an epitome of the bitterness in the lives of men who are living in a society where there are only expectations from them and no acceptance for them”, announced Gaurav Saini, coordinator of the Chandigarh Chapter,
But why men’s rights conference. “This men’s rights conference is being conducted to discuss and intensify the awareness campaign of the various problems being faced by men in India as sons, brothers, husbands and fathers including skyrocketing suicide rates by men, especially married men. As per National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB)”, said Mandeep Puri, coordinator, Chandigarh Chapter.

Reports say more married men, in comparison to women, commit suicide after marriage. Isn’t it time we had some law to protect men against marital harassment?

Before we start with this week’s discussion, here’s a little piece of information. The suicide rate amongst married men in India is much higher than that of married women. The number of employed men in public as well as private sector has dropped by 1.4 million this year, more than 82 per cent taxes earned by the Indian Government from men. But in past 60 years, the funds allocated in the Budget for men’s welfare has been zero. Every day more than 192 men end their life compared to 112 women as per Crime Bureau reports. According to a report and survey conducted by the Save India family, an organisation working for men welfare, on an average 32 percent males feel economically abused, 22 per cent emotionally abused and the rest comes under physical and social abuse.

New Delhi, July 17, 2010: Thirteen years after the Supreme Court ordered implementation of a set of guidelines to protect women from sexual harassment at work, the government has drafted a bill to replace the guidelines issued in the 'Vishaka case'. The Prohibition of Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace Bill, 2010 is expected to be tabled in Parliament this monsoon session.

It's interesting to note that on March 10 this year, Pakistan enacted a similar law under which a culprit can be sent to jail. The Indian draft, however, does not go that far. A guilty employee can be sacked at the most and the victim compensated financially. If the act is criminal, the victim will then have to charge the offender under other laws.

New Delhi, July 28: Disclosure on its mind, an umbrella group of male rights NGOs has demanded that the sexual harassment at workplace bill be rewritten and made gender-neutral to protect men from harassment.

The Save Indian Family Foundation claims the bill has been prepared on the flawed premise that “women never lie and all the men are born a criminal” at a time men are also becoming victims of sexual exploitation.

The argument has echoes of the 1994 Hollywood thriller in which Michael Douglas’s character sues a colleague, played by Demi Moore, over sexual harassment.

The bill, prepared by the women and child development ministry and in the pipeline for the past five years, is to be introduced in the current session of Parliament.

The male rights NGOs under the foundation want the bill discarded and a fresh gender-neutral draft prepared. They have alleged that the women and child ministry, now headed by the Congress’s Krishna Tirath, is “sexist” and should be taken out of the picture. The new blueprint should be jointly drafted by a group of ministries, the NGOs have said and even demanded a separate ministry for men’s welfare.

Invited cops stay away from function

Chandigarh, July 25
The Save Indian Family Foundation (SIFF) today celebrated its first anniversary at Leisure Valley, Sector 10, here. The organiser had invited senior police personnel from Chandigarh and Mohali, but they did not turn up. The federation, in a press statement, cited shortcomings in the department as the reason behind senior officials pulling off the function.

The federation had started its Chandigarh chapter in July last year and had been lending support and legal assistance to those implicated in false dowry cases. The Save Indian Family Foundation, a non-funded organisation, came into existence in 2005 and its headquarters is located in Bangalore.
